Baptism

Jesus commands that His people be baptized.

Matthew 28:18-20: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Baptism is simply an outward symbol of an inward reality. Baptism signifies the change that we have experienced in and through Christ and is an opportunity to demonstrate 3 important distinctions of a believer:

1) You are publicly professing your trust in and relationship with Jesus.

Acts 8:12: "But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women."

2) You are publicly identifying with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Colossians 2:12: "Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead."

3) You are publicly committing to turning from your old life of sin and embracing your new life in Jesus. Romans 6:4: "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

Baptism does not save you, only faith in Christ can do that; and therefore, baptism does not make you a believer but rather it shows that you are one.
